Relations with Moldova

After the collapse of the USSR in 1991, Peter von Canisius opened negotiations with the new Sovereign States that before had been part of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), with the view to establish Diplomatic relations with the Sovereign Order of Malta. Due to his professional career, during which Ambassador von Canisius spent 14 years in Moscow and established the first Diplomatic Mission of the Sovereign Order of Malta to the Russian Federation in 1993, the Ambassador already had an extensive network of contacts with the Russian Foreign Ministry as well with Representatives of the Diplomatic Corps in Moscow.

The official appointment of Peter von Canisius as Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta to the Republic of Moldova took place in 2001 and marks the official start of diplomatic relations with this country.
